How to select your first water heater banner

Your career has been steadily progressing over the past few years, and you are now in a financially secured position to be able to afford better things in life. At the same time, it is also possible that you, too, have found your perfect partner, and is looking forward to planning a future with him or her. In fact, you’re both dreaming of a new home with nice furniture in the living room, a big, comfy bed in the bedroom, and a warm, relaxing shower with an electric water heater in the bathroom after a long day at the office.

While all these may sound wonderful, there are quite a few considerations to have when purchasing that beautiful home, that luxurious furniture, or that soothing instant water heater. Here at Rheem, we cannot give you advice on how to pick the best house. But as a water heating expert, we can definitely share some tips with you on how to select your first water heater.

Understanding All About Water Heaters

You may think that buying a water heater is a simple process. But we tell you with certainty that it is absolutely not! We say so because we don’t want you to find yourself in a scenario where you are standing in a hardware shop, looking at the different types of water heaters available but unsure on how to decide on what kind of water heater suits you best. Hence, to save you from all these troubles, we put together a simple article to help you gain a little understanding on water heating products.

1. Power Source of Water Heater

There are several different ways in which you can power your water heater. The more commonly power sources are through gas, solar power, or electricity. All of them can be used in a typically Malaysian household, and they each offer their own sets of benefits. You must be wondering what they are? Well, let’s find out more.

Gas Water Heater

The good thing about gas water heaters is that the daily operating cost is rather affordable. However, gas water heaters can be hard to install. This is because for safety reasons, such as an accidental gas leak, gas water heaters must be installed outside your house. Hence, if your home does not have a good provision for an outdoor water heater, you shouldn’t go for a gas one in the first place.

Solar Water Heater

As the name suggests, solar water heater uses energy emitted from the sun to heat water up. With solar water heaters, your daily operating cost can be very, very low, perhaps lower than gas water heaters. Moreover, with solar water heaters, you can reduce your carbon footprint and do your part for Mother Earth. However, the upfront and installation costs for solar water heater are not cheap. Moreover, you need easy access to your own rooftop space in order to install a solar water heater. Hence, if you do not have your own private rooftop or you are unwilling to pay a hefty upfront cost, then a solar water heater is not your cup of tea.

Electric Water Heater

Out of all the available energy sources to power a water heater, electricity is the most common and convenient form of energy source and is widely used across Malaysia. Apart from that, the installation process is quite straightforward because you do not need to have your own private rooftop space nor to install the water heater outdoors and installing additional pipes to send heated water to your bathroom. With an electric tankless hot water heater or instant water heater, installation is simpler because the water heater unit is installed onto your bathroom wall. This means that your plumber will have an easier time because he/she does not need to install additional pipes.

2. Type of Water Heater

Broadly speaking, there are two main types of water heaters: tankless or instant water heaters, as well as storage or tank water heaters. If you are unsure which type of water heater is suitable for your usage, then we would recommend you continue reading to better understand how each water heater works.

1. Storage Water Heater

As the name suggests, storage water heaters heat water up and stores them in a storage tank. What makes storage water heaters great is that it can provide hot water to multiple points at home, while ensuring excellent water pressure, even with simultaneously use.

However, storage water heaters are bulky in size, which can take up a lot of space in your bathroom or home. Moreover, installation of storage water heaters requires a fair amount of effort because additional pipes may be required, especially if you intend to use hot water at multiple points at home.

2. Instant Water Heater

This type of water heater is most commonly used in Malaysia. Slim and compact in size, this type of water heater does not take up much space. Installation is also simple and straightforward as it can be easily installed on the walls of your bathroom, and there is no need to have complicated pipes installed. Because instant water heaters are tankless in nature, heating occurs instantaneously, which means it does not take long for the water to be heated up. Additionally, you never have to worry about running out of hot water.
