What is an Incoloy® Heating Element

| Tuesday September 24, 2019
What is an incoloy heating element

For most of us, we view metals as they are: things are either metallic (made of metal), or they are not. But, do you know that metals exist in many different forms? Do you know that some metals are pure elements produced by Mother Earth, while others are man-made? However useful some natural metals are, they may not be all that perfect for what we need to use them for. For example, some natural metals may be quite strong, but may tend to rust easily, while others are light in their purest form, but are far too soft and weak to be of much use. That is why, in order to create materials that better meet our needs, humans began experimenting by combining pure metals with other metallic and/or non-metallic elements. This resulted in man-made metals called alloys, which are, essentially, substances with enhanced properties such as reduced costs, extra durability, lowered levels of corrosion, electrical conductivity, and even faster heat transfer rates.
One of the many types of alloys include Incoloy®, which is a type of superalloy or high-performance alloy. Founded and produced by the Special Metals Corporation group of companies, Incoloys are known to be excellent at resisting corrosion, as well as handling and transferring heat at high temperatures.
Incoloy® was first introduced in the market in the 1950s as an economical alternative to another superalloy, Inconel® which is predominantly nickel-chrome with over 50% nickel content. At that time, nickel was a costly metal, so Incoloy® was primarily invented to include lower nickel content (made with less than 50% nickel) in order to reduce the overall production cost while still retaining its anti-rust and heat transfer properties.
Composed of nickel, iron and chromium, Incoloy® is widely used for its ability and strength to withstand high temperatures, resist oxidation and other types of high temperature corrosion.
These properties make this alloy an ideal choice for the manufacturing of industrial products such as electric heat pipes and other high-temperature resistant products such as water heaters.
A key feature of Rheem’s Prestige Instant Water Heaters, Incoloy® heating element aids in faster water heating while enhancing the water heater’s lifespan and durability.

Designed to resist burn-out, Incoloy® Heating Element also enhances the overall performance of Rheem Prestige Instant Water Heaters. Unlike copper, which is used in most water heaters, Incoloy® can withstand high temperature and corrosion.
When choosing the right instant water heater for your home, look for one that comes with quality and the capability to provide comfort and safety for your family. Rheem Prestige Instant Water Heaters are designed with all these in mind, backed by Rheem’s extensive experience in producing water heating solutions for all our customers everywhere in the world.
Rheem Prestige Instant Water Series is available in three (3) models – Prestige, Prestige Plus and Prestige Platinum.
